OpenCaster

OpenCaster is a free desktop tool for windows (soon to be available on mac), which allows you to broadcast commonly used media files (mp4,mp4,flv,avi,etc...) from your desktop to your favourite RTMP server, such as Flash media server / Wowza media server / Red5 Media Server.

OpenCaster is powered by the open source FFMPEG encoder engine. You need to download the latest FFMPEG binary from the web to your computer system before using this application. The recommended place to get your FFMPEG binary would be - http://ffmpeg.zeranoe.com/builds/ . To get started, download the static build of the FFMPEG library to your system, and browse locate the binary executable file from within OpenCaster.

Download FFmpeg git-c78a416 32-bit Static

Download FFmpeg git-c78a416 64-bit Static

This is a freebie from RTMPWorld.com, and is recommended for use on non commercial systems only. This is not a complete noob's deal. you need to have atleast some idea about streaming to use this application.

Getting Started

1. Download and install OpenCaster application from our downloads section http://rtmpworld.com/downloads/freebies

2. Download and extract latest ffmpeg binaries for windows from http://ffmpeg.zeranoe.com/builds/ on your system where it has read/write permissions.  We prefer to download the static build of the FFMPEG executable library.

3. Launch OpenCaster and you should see the Settings section of the application.Under the Settings section, browse and locate your ffmpeg executable. Once you have selected the correct file OpenCaster will check it and display the FFMPEG log as shown below.

4. Once OpenCaster has recognized FFMPEG library, its time to start creating your playlist. Click on the "Create New" button in the Encoding tab or "New" button in playlist manager tab. In the dialog that opens enter the new playlist's name. Location is best left untouched as OpenCaster selects the best location for playlist files by itself. Click "Create" to create the new playlist.

5. The newly created playlist is automatically loaded for editing in playlist manager. Use the Add Item, Delete Item and Clear All buttons to add/remove  media files from the playlist. As you select files, playlist manager auto saves the playlist content after each analysis.

6. Once you have added all files switch to the"Encoding"tab. Select the playlist you want to play in the drop down box. Set a rtmp/rtmpt/rtmpe/rtmps publish url in the Destination box. The url must include application instance  and stream name.

&. You can optionally set application instance and stream name in Settings section if you need to preview your broadcast.

9. You can adjust video encoding settings in the Video section. you can change codec, bitrate, aspect, resolution, quality and more

10. You can change audio encoding settings in the Audio section. You can change codec, bitrate and audio sample rate.

11. When ready you can click on the "Start Process" button to start encoding  - publishing process. You may click the "Cancel" button at any time to abort the process.

12. As a special feature, OpenCaster can also be started via command line / Shell. You need to invoke the executable with a parameter which is the absolute path of playlist to encode. IE: PROMPT:> C:\OpenCaster  C:\Users\Username\Documents\opencaster\myplaylist.pml. This will invoke OpenCaster with the playlist myplaylist.pml and command it to start publishing it to your RTMP server. You can use windows scheduler or nay third party scheduler to invoke OpenCaster at a particular time.

OpenCaster is a free application and in premature stages. Please report bugs to support[AT]flashvisions.com. We will do our best to improve things to th ebest of our efforts.

Basic things to know - !!

* Quality of output of the rtmp stream depends on your encode settings, your uplink speed and your rtmp server settings.

* OpenCaster supports Sorenson, H264 video codecs and Mp3, AAC Experimental (internal) , AAC External, Nellymoser audio codecs.

* Video encode settings param Quality(0-51) controls quality of the frames within given bitrate limit. Standard being 20. You can use a value of 0 for lossless encoding. This overrides bitrate limitation.

* Some settings such as Presets and Profiles work with H264 video codec only.

* If your playlist contains a list of mixed media (video and audio), the encoder will automatically disable video settings for audio files.

* You can yourself monitor the log console for errors, as all errors are not accounted for by the GUI.

* OpenCaster can act as a file converter as well. All you need to do is change Destination from RTMP URL to a file output path (eg: d:\output.mp4)
